Obama's Peace Prize

LA Times Editorial Piece:

I am so happy our president was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The Nobel committee's belief that Obama deserved recognition "for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples" and his "vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons" far outweighs any criticism, including your disappointing editorial.Achievement of Obama's goals takes time. Promoting hope and the possibility for peace must be immediate in order to change the tenor of our times.

Madeline DeAntonio Encino

Many argue that it is too soon for him to win such an award. One man stated "After hearing that Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize, I immediately wrote the Nobel committee telling them that although I had not really accomplished anything in the field of science, I am forever talking about how much we need a cure for cancer. Surely, I explained to the committee, that should make me a clear front-runner for next year's Nobel in chemistry.

Based on the preceding arguments' claim and premises, do you think Obama is deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize? What are your thoughts? Give evidence to support your ideas . Speak on it seniors!

  1. I DONT THINK THAT OBAMA SHOULD HAVE BEEN AWARDED THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE. WHY? BECAUSE HE HASNT DONE ANYTHING TO EARN IT. PEOPLE WHO RECIEVE THE NOBEL PIECE PRIZE ARE PEOPLE WHO HAVE DONE SOMETHING EXTRAORDINARY IN A CERTAIN FIELD. AND THE NOMINATIONS FOR THE NOBEL PIECE PRIZE HAVE TO BE IN AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR, WHICH MEANS OBAMA HAD NOT EVEN BEEN IN OFFICE FOR A MONTH BEFORE HE WAS NOMINATED, AND IN THAT TIME PERIOD NOTHING DESERVING OF A NOBEL PIECE PRIZE WAS ACCOMPLISHED. IT MAKES NO SENSE TO ME THAT HIS NOMINATION WAS EVEN CONSIDERED.

  2. Although Obama has achieve with diplomacy(which the media barely talk about), it was too soon for him to win the Nobel Peace Prize. He has not yet done something that will beneift the world, or to this Country. -Tyler Nunley

  3. personally and honestly think that obama deserves, the Nobel peace prize, he has taken the leadership to devour the load of our Economic crisis. he is trying to find an solution to an major that should not have gone this far. even though, he has not been in the office for long, he still deserved every second of the Nobel peace prize. the media haven't even taken the time to recognize this wonderful and unforgettable moment, prior to when he made an statement toward kayne west behavior at the mtv awards. in my opinion, nobody wants to take the recognition that he has to fix the solution for the crisis that we are in today. obama did not contribute to these horrible standards that we live in today. he is only one person, with an brilliant soul, that makes other people and i believe he will get the job done. you have to take in consideration, that the crisis that we have been witnessing will or can not be fixed overnight. it takes time to deliver the promising works habits, which he has discussed. it is only an matter of time, when these crisis will be sustained from our lives. with that being said, i believe that obama deserves the Nobel peace prize for accepting and doing the best he can to fix the disaster that we encounter today.

  4. I BELIEVE THAT OBAMA DESERVES THE PEACE PRIZE. HE HAS RECLAIMED AMERICA'S GOOD NAME. HE HAS SET FORTH MANY IDEAS ON HOW TO NOT ONLY IMPROVE THE WELL BEING OF AMERICAN BUT ALSO THE WORLD. HE HAS IMPROVED AMERICA'S ECONOMIC CRISIS BY SUPPLING US WITH EXTRA MONEY IN OUR POCKETS AND IMPROVING THE WORLD ENVORIMENT. MANY PEOPLE DISAGREE WITH THIS BUT THE ONLY REASON THAT THEY SAY THAT HE HAS NOT DONE ANY THING IS BECAUSE CONGRESS HAS NOT BEEN ON HIS SIDE FOR THE MOST PART. OBAMA IS GOING TO LEAD US TO BETTER DAYS, SO THEY ARE GIVING HIM THE PRIZE AHEAD OF TIME. -matthew brown

  5. I agree with shante and matthew, Obama most certainly deserves the nobel peac prize. Yes, he has not been in office that long, and he hasn't gotten to everything he needs to do because things take time, nothing is going to happen overnight. They awared Obama the nobel peace prize, because they believe in his plan and what it stands for. He has wonderfull things instore for our country, and he is going to make it better. Most people understand, that he are in an economic crisis and its going to take time to rebulid all the damages that has occured, and thats what Obama plans to do.

  6. Honestly, I think he does deserve the Nobel Peace prize because he is promoting peace in the world and he's on the right track to improving society as a whole...People underestimate Obama and let that get in the way of their perspective on him. Eventhough he has not been in office for a long period of time, I know the results of his labor will reflect good things about how strong he wants change for the betterment of the country and the people.

  7. I was shocked and surprised at the same time. I did not expect Obama to achieve this accolade. I was overwhelmed with joy when I found out, but only one question appeared in my mind. Does Obama really deserve the Nobel Peace Prize? Has the President brought peace to the world? The answer could be yes and no. America is still in a war with Iraq. Obama has promised the return of the U.S. soldiers. Hopefully, the president will keep his promise. Unfortunately, Obama is only a small piece to the world's puzzle.

  8. When I had discovered that Barack Obama had recieved the Nobel Peace Prize I was happy but as I thought about it I began to have mixed emotions. I was happy because Barack Obama had done so much for this country emotionally. He had eliminated some of the lingering white supremacy and racism that is holding the United States back from truely beeing "one nation" and "inddivisible". He has also motivated and encouraged other African Americans to do what seems impossible.

On the other hand I dont feeel it is right to recieve the Nobel Peace Prize because you are making people feel better about themselves. His moral activity has been phenomonal. He has made alot of promises that have informed the United States of the better days to come but until those days do come and the promises are carried out I don't think he deserves the Nobel Prize.

  9. First of all, I didn't even know Barack Obama was given such a grand commendation. I mean...the Nobel Peace Prize is an award in which only a few people have gotten, and it took years, maybe decades for those few people to get it. Barack Obama on the other hand got it in a much shorter amount of time. It's true that Barack Obama has erased some of the financial problems for American citizens, provided substantial healthcare, and has even diminished the need for nuclear weapons. As president, it makes his everyday tasks a lot harder to manage, but still...I don't think he deserves a prize like THAT yet.

  10. Personally I do not feel President Obama should have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize soley because he has oustanding ideas to promote peace. If Obama is worthy of The Nobel Peace Prize than many other ordinary people are too noble of the Nobel Peace Prize. I agree with scientist who felt he should be a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize in Science, because he too has ideas about finding a cure for cancer.

  11. Obama recieve the Nobel Peace Prize what else is there to say.. It doesnt matter how people feel about it either. Apparently there are people in the world that believe that he deserves the award and so he got it. There is always somebody whose trying to put the BLACK man down. People were asking the same question if Obama was ready to be the President? There were doudts due to the fact that he was to young, his daddy was an African and Obama is a Black man etc...until this day Obama is holding it down better then most of the Presidents before him. Every little thing that has happen to him somebody goes out of there way to blast that information. Most of the African American community compare Obama to Martin Luther King Jr. and he got a Nobel Peace Prize. Did Mr. King deserve THAT AWARD? Obama deserve to get an award "for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples". Can we please just be happy for the man instead of making it worst then has to be?

  12. Honestly i could argue both sides to why Obama should or shouldnt win the nobel peace prize. But in this case i would say that ever since he has become president people have been trying to put him down and make him seem as though he isnt trying to help this nation get back on its feet. In my opinion he has been making a great effort slowly reconstructing and make things happen for our people. He has dedicated hisself to make our world a better place which will have a great impact on everyones life.So why shouldnt he win this award? why should he be deprived of winning a great honor because someone doesnt agree with this descision?

  13. The Nobel Peace Prize should be earned, not merely awarded for what we hope will happen. Obama is not responsible for the peace seen in the world since his election. Peace is a long-term process,
People like Ghandi have a vision, and sacrifice their life to it. Where are their awards? Why is Obama such a presitgious award simply for saying he has a vision? How politically sad that is.I don't. Perhaps in the future, but not yet. The most incredibly absurd part of this is that the nomination deadline was a mere two weeks after he took office. He was nominated a mere 2 weeks into his presidency?

  14. I belive that Obama's nomination was a little premature. Yes Obama does have great plans for America, but he has yet to complete any of them. Obama won his prize for what he plans to do, not for what he has done.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Personally, I do not believe that Obama deserved such a prestigious award so early in his presidency. I think that it could have waited a little bit longer until he actually did some thing that has influnced peace in america. If Madeline DeAntonio Encino has been paying a bit of attention to our nation. She would have realized that we are still in a war, and although Obama has been attempting to work the world without Nuclear weapons. He still has yet to succeed to bring peace to not only America but Iraq as well.

I respect Obama 100% but I would have to dissagree with him recieveing this award so early ans he still has yet to do anything that has made even the smallest difference in America alone.

  16. I PERSONALLY BELIEVE THAT OBAMA DID NOT DESERVE THE NOBLE PEACE PRIZE, I FEEL THAT WE AS A SOCIETY ARE TO EXCITED ABOUT HAVING AN AFRICAN AMERICAN PRESIDENT IN OFFICE AND WE ARE LETTING THAT CONTROL OUR ACTIONS. YES! OBAMA IS MAKING CHANGES AND IS DOING A GREAT JOB AT THAT BUT I FEEL THAT UNTIL THESE GOALS HE HAS SET FORTH FOR THIS COUNTRY ARE ACCOMPLISHED THEN WE SHOULD JUST WAIT AND SEE. USUALLY PEOPLE RECIEVE AWARDS AFTER THEY HAVE ACCOMPLISHED A GOAL OR MANY GOALS OVER A PERIOD OF TIME SO I DO NOT SEE WHY WE FEEL A NEED TO REWARD OBAMA FOR THINGS HE HAS NOT YET ACCOMPLISHED. AND WHO KNOWS, WHAT IF HE NEVER GETS A CHANCE TO MAKE THOSE CHANGES WE ALL ARE HOPING FOR, THEN WHAT? WE CAN NOT TAKE THE AWARD BACK.

  17. Honestly I think that the Noble Prize does not depend on how long a person has been in office,it depends on how valuable that person has been to society and what there value is to us makin the world a better place.President Obama deserved to win this because of the loyalty and dedication he is showing to make the United States of America a safer and better place for its citizens.

  19. No I don't believe president Obama deserved teh Nobel Peace Prize. I think the only reason why people believe he should have won was because he's African American and has plans to create world peace. He has not yet made any changes so therefore he did not deserve this award.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Even though Obama hasn't been in office long enough and i pretty sure there are other people out there who truly deserve the prize. I believe that Obama has done a lot of wonderful things to help this nation. Obama is the first african american President who is making a difference and he is trying to get us out of this economic crisis. This world was torn down when Bush was in the White House and Obama is doing everything in his power to bring our nation back up to its potential. So thats why I think that Obama deserved the Nobel peace prize. He' just an extraordinary man.

  21. I honestly believe that President Obama should not have been awarded the Noble Peace Prize, only because he has not done anything thing extraordinary in a certain field. Him becoming a the first black President is an achievement but it has not cure anything, there is still racism there is still cancer spreading and there is still war. Until he finds a cure for something that is going to affect the world in a positive way then that award was not need. If Pres. Obama succeeds in his goal of world peace and a nation without economical issues then he should be award the Noble Peace Prize. As far as now Pres. Obama has no reason to have received that award.

  22. While I'm very proud of this achievement for the leader of the free world, I must ask, why did he get this award???? The fact that we are in two wars and he is still sending troops over there daily is a huge problem. There is over thousands and thousands of our young people losing the fight over there and for what? We are in a useless war and its not getting better by the looks of it. Theirs still a economic recession in this country and its still rears in ugly head on the market. Overall, Obama has done well in the one year he has been in office. BUT he is far from deserving of such an award.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think Barack Obama did deserve the Noble Peace Prize but I dont think he's rally impacted the world that much yet. I think if he was in office longer, then it would not have been a problem with if he deserved it or not.

  24. I dont think obama should get the nobel peace prize NOW.I like his ideas and what he wants for the future but he hasnt actually done those things.Eventually he will do really great things for the country and the world but he hasnt even been in the office for a full year.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I believe that Barack Obama does not deserve the Nobel Peace Prize this soon in his presidency. So far that he has been in office he hasn't done anything big that has changed society in a positive way. He has good thoughts and ideas about what done for our country but hasn't fulfilled any of those ideas yet.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think that he shouldn't have gotten it so soon. He hasn't really done anything yet for him to be deserving of it. Yes, he has made history but he has not did anything to "change" USA for the better. He has started but has not completed his tasks. There are other people out there that are far more deserving than he is at this point.

  27. Well we dont really know what Obama has done behind closed doors. People say "Obama doesn't derserve the Noble Peace Price." But do we really know what he is doing every second of the day? no. The Noble Peace Prize does not determine how Long Obama has been in office, its about chararcter. i believe Obama deserves what he has earned, because he earned it for a reason. Obama has been doing things differently he's not rushing like the other presidents in the past, he is taking his time as he should to make the change. Obama will prove to us that he deserved that Noble Peace Prize.

  28. President Obama deserves the nobel piece prize for a number of reasons. Those who say he hasn't done anything in a short amount of time are just false. One of the biggest acts of peace is trying to end the war in iraq. President Obama should receive plenty recognition for this and other acts of peace. I don't believe it is too soon to achieve this award at all. If he truly deserves the award then the time which received the award is irrelevant.

I believe everyone who says that he hasn't done anything to receive the award should honestly check their facts and read up on current events a little more, because you are WRONG. CLEARLY he was nominated for a reason. This means that there is a good amount of people that believe he has done credible acts towards peace. I'm almost positive that those people who nominated him have paid close attention to his acts of peace too, unlike 16, 17, and 18 year olds in our grade. Come on people....check your facts before you speak on things.

  29. I feel that Obama should have won the Nobel Prize award. If he should not have won then why did so many people vote on him? EXACTLY! We must pay attetion to the little things he has done before we speak upon him and say he hsanet done anything. The little peace that we have gotten from the people is not just coming from anywhere. Although, some things can be much better. Obviously, if he has won the award no matter how soon it is, he must have done something.

  30. I believe that Obama shouldn't have recieved the Noble Peace Prize, because he didn't earn it. What I mean by that is that he recieved it for his policy and not the results of his policy, this is why he shouldn't have recieved the award.

  31. I agree with Kadija that Obama should not recieve the Noble Peace Prize now. Yes Obama has done great things into finding solution to solve our economic crisis and changing the racial status between whites and blacks, but that shouldnt give him the noble peace prize not as president but maybe after his four year term in office.

    ReplyDelete
  32. umm WoW, this is pretty interesting to know but I believe that even though he is being awarded this that he doesn't deserve it just yet. He just got into office. We have to understand we have had greater presidents then him so far and they didn't receive a peace prize, so why Obama?

    ReplyDelete
  33. I believe that President Obama should not receive such a prestigious award just yet because he has not been in office for not even a year yet and he hasn't really done anything in office except pass a few bills and get shot down by republicans and the media about his health care bill. I feel that he got the nobel peace prize just because he is the President of the United States and he is African American.

  34. Obama deserved the Nobel Peace Prize for trying his best to hit on points in the nation that are particularly important. For instance, health care. Health care is one of the biggest reasons America is on its way to calling out bankruptcy. Obama has proposed a health care reform, explaining his veiws and ideas on health care. Obama has also accompished a goal many people has agreed was impossible, he became the first African American to become president of the United States. Obama is taking action in America to better it, we must wait patiently to see if it all pulls through.
